Keep an eye on 2100.nu – it’s the future!

2100.nu is an innovation project focusing on the overall CO2 emissions of the urban area of  Østerbro and new ways to reduce them. The project exploits the melting pot of knowledge and enthusiasm which can lead to new awareness and innovation. The project will involve approx. 1400 housing associations with 60,000 residents. The residents of Østerbro will work actively to find solutions to reduce the CO2 emissions of the urban area by approx. 10% in the first year and more in the long term. The project will bring residents, knowledge centres, grass-roots, educational establishments and companies together in completely new ways.

The project methods will show how innovation and product development can become part of everyday life in an urban urban area where new sustainable initiatives and products become part of daily life for the benefit of residents and companies as well as for the climate. The aim is to create 40 new and innovative CO2 concepts that are able to lead to 10 new commercial CO2-reducing products and services in the areas of energy, service, waste and transport.

This will be done by

  • Organising mobilisation activities to inspire residents to change their habits, get into new routines and use alternative technological solutions.
  • Offering specific knowledge, advice and access to recognised technological solutions with CO2-reducing effects in the areas of housing, waste and transport.
  • Implementing and facilitating structured and unstructured innovation processes in partnerships with public institutions and private companies, advisers and service providers as well as knowledge institutions.
  • Stimulating the participating companies’ and residents’ motivation and commitment through events, film, idea camps, competitions and identity-generating functions.

Urban Driven Innovation

As the first project in the world, 2100.nu is working with Urban Driven Innovation. The concept was invented and developed by Environment Point Østerbro, Copenhagen Energy and the Danish Technological Institute. Urban Driven Innovation views an urban area as an unutilized creative resource which can be used to create innovation and new products in companies to help solve climate-related challenges.

This is done by combining urban development theory (network management, citizen mobilisation and institutional set-up) with the innovation methods of Open Source Innovation and Open Innovation at national level for the development of new ideas and solutions in both open and closed forums.

  • Combining solid citizen mobilisation in an urban area with product  development in companies to create the products of the future.
  • Combining top-down strategies in the form of public/private partnerships, with bottom-up strategies in shape of citizen and grass-roots participation in generating changes in energy consumption and commercial products.
  • Combining green identity-generating strategies at resident level with real action, innovation and development
